How Early Should You Leave for the Airport in Istanbul?
On the day you fly, one question comes up every time: what time do I need to leave the hotel? In Istanbul there is no single answer. A drive that takes half an hour at 5 a.m. can take twice as long at 6 p.m., and the city's two airports sit at opposite ends of town. This guide shows how long it takes to reach Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) from the neighborhoods where most visitors stay, at different times of day, and walks you through working out your departure time.
The calculation has three parts
To work out when to leave, add up three things:
- When you need to be at the airport. Airlines generally advise arriving about 2 hours before a domestic flight and about 3 hours before an international one. The exact rule, including when check-in closes, is on your ticket and your airline's website, so check it there.
- The drive time at that hour. See the lists below.
- A buffer for the things you cannot predict: rain, an accident, pre-holiday traffic.
Airports in Turkey have a security check at the terminal entrance as well as the usual one before departures. At busy times the entrance queue adds a few minutes, so factor it into your buffer.
Drive times to Istanbul Airport (IST)
The figures below come from Google Routes traffic predictions for a typical Tuesday. Distances are approximate, times are in minutes and reflect estimates as of 2026; on the day, conditions will vary.
- Taksim (about 39 km): 32 min at 5:00, 36 min at 8:00 and noon, 46 min at 17:30, 36 min at 22:00.
- Sultanahmet (about 47 km): 37 min at 5:00, 43 at 8:00, 49 at noon, 63 at 17:30, 46 at 22:00.
- Beşiktaş (about 39 km): 31 min at 5:00, 38 at 8:00, 39 at noon, 58 at 17:30, 38 at 22:00.
- Şişli / Mecidiyeköy (about 37 km): 27 min at 5:00, 31 during the day, 41 at 17:30.
- Kadıköy (about 52 km): 42 min at 5:00, 66 at 8:00, 64 at noon, 76 at 17:30, 52 at 22:00.
- Ataşehir (about 53 km): 35 min at 5:00, 59 at 8:00, 51 at noon, 61 at 17:30, 41 at 22:00.
From the central European-side districts, the drive to Istanbul Airport is fairly steady outside the evening peak. From the Asian side it is a different story: you have to cross the Bosphorus, and even mid-morning the trip can approach an hour.
Drive times to Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)
The same day and the same departure times, heading to Sabiha Gökçen:
- Taksim (about 41 km): 34 min at 5:00, 47 at 8:00, 49 at noon, 87 at 17:30, 45 at 22:00.
- Sultanahmet (about 44 km): 36 min at 5:00, 47 at 8:00 and noon, 78 at 17:30, 41 at 22:00.
- Beşiktaş (about 39 km): 31 min at 5:00, 42 at 8:00, 43 at noon, 76 at 17:30, 40 at 22:00.
- Şişli / Mecidiyeköy (about 39 km): 32 min at 5:00, 45 at 8:00, 46 at noon, 77 at 17:30.
- Kadıköy (about 35 km): 32 min at 5:00, 43 at 8:00, 44 at noon, 68 at 17:30, 38 at 22:00.
- Ataşehir (about 24 km): between 21 and 30 min all day.
The evening numbers stand out. Leave the European side for Sabiha Gökçen around 17:30 and you will spend roughly twice as long on the road as someone making the same trip in the morning. Fridays are a little heavier still: the estimate from Taksim at 17:30 on a Friday is 90 minutes.
Not sure which airport is closer to where you are staying? Our Istanbul Airport vs Sabiha Gökçen guide compares them.
Three worked examples
Sultanahmet, morning international flight from IST
Your flight leaves at 10:30, so you want to be at the airport by 7:30. Around 7:00 the drive takes roughly 40–45 minutes. Add a 30-minute buffer and leaving at about 6:15 gives you a comfortable margin.
Taksim, evening flight from SAW
Your flight is at 20:30, so you need to be at the airport by 17:30. That is exactly when the drive from Taksim to Sabiha Gökçen peaks: 87 minutes on a weekday, 90 on a Friday. With a buffer, leaving between 15:30 and 15:45 makes sense. The classic mistake is planning around the 45-minute drive you saw that morning.
Kadıköy, early-afternoon domestic flight from IST
The flight is at 15:00, so being at the airport by 13:00 is enough. Around midday the drive from Kadıköy to Istanbul Airport is estimated at about 64 minutes. With 30–40 minutes of buffer, aim to leave around 11:15.
Choosing your transfer pickup time
When you book with TristGo you enter the pickup address, the airport, the date and the time. On the price step you see the route options with the distance and estimated duration of each. That estimate assumes normal traffic flow. If your trip falls in the evening rush, the real journey can be noticeably longer, as the lists above show. So when you pick a time, go by the hour-by-hour estimates in this guide plus your own buffer, not by the duration on the screen.
On trips that cross between Europe and Asia, the bridge-or-tunnel question also affects the time. We cover which crossing suits which neighborhood in our bridge or tunnel guide, and how crossing fees appear in your price in our guide to tolls.
How much buffer is enough?
There is no hard rule, but this approach works well:
- After midnight and in the very early morning, drive times are at their shortest and most predictable. A small buffer is fine.
- On weekdays between 16:00 and 20:00, especially if you cross the Bosphorus, be generous.
- Add more on rainy days, before public holidays and on days with big events in the city.
- Families with children, groups and anyone with a lot of luggage also spend longer inside the terminal, so allow for that.
Night and early-morning flights
For departures between 6:00 and 8:00 you usually leave somewhere between 3:00 and 5:00. The 5:00 figures in the lists above are a good guide for those hours: the roads are empty and drive times are close to their shortest. At that hour the real risk is not the road but getting yourself out of the door. Settle your hotel bill the night before, check that reception will be staffed, and pack the evening before, and you will not lose minutes in the morning.
When you arrive at the airport
Your transfer drops you at the departures level. After the entrance security check you head to the check-in counters or bag drop. If you have checked in online and only carry hand luggage, this step is shorter, but we would still keep the same buffer.
