A Private-Car Day Trip from Istanbul to Abant and Yedigöller

Abant Lake and Yedigöller are two of the nearest nature destinations to Istanbul, and both are in Bolu. Because they look close to each other on the map, many people plan to see both in one day. The numbers show what that plan really costs. This guide covers drive times from Istanbul to Abant and to Yedigöller, which of the two makes sense as a day trip, and how to plan the day by private car.

Istanbul to Abant Lake

The distance from Taksim to Abant Lake is about 237 km. According to Google Routes traffic predictions (approximate, as of 2026):

  • Leaving Saturday 06:30: 183 min (3 h 3 min)
  • Leaving Saturday 17:00: 218 min
  • Leaving Sunday 17:00: 195 min

Leaving from Kadıköy is somewhat shorter: 181 min at 06:30 on Saturday, 204 at 17:00, 186 at 17:00 on Sunday. On the way back, Abant to Taksim is about 247 km and the predictions run from 187 to 209 minutes. So Abant is roughly three to three and a half hours each way, six and a half to seven hours round trip.

Istanbul to Yedigöller

Yedigöller is farther. From Taksim it is about 319 km, with predictions of 206 min leaving Saturday 06:30, 233 at 17:00 and 207 on Sunday at 17:00. Back from Yedigöller to Taksim is about 328 km and 200–227 minutes. One way is close to three and a half to four hours.

Doing both in one day

Abant to Yedigöller is about 121 km and 86–92 minutes. On paper that looks close, but the total for the day tells a different story. Leave Taksim at 06:30 on a Saturday, drive to Abant, go on to Yedigöller and drive back to Taksim, and the road time adds up to 183 + 86 + 200 = 469 minutes, about 7 hours 50 minutes. That is driving only, with breaks, meals, time at the lakes and park entry on top. For many travellers that much driving in a day is tiring. Our suggestion is to pick one lake for a day trip. If you want to see both, a night in Bolu makes for a much more relaxed plan.

Route and crossing fees

From Taksim to Abant, the fastest of the options the booking system calculates runs over the Northern Marmara Motorway (a Google estimate of 194 minutes). The option over the Anatolian Motorway (O-4) takes 200 minutes. The difference between the two is about 6 minutes.

With the current fees set in the booking system (approximate, as of 2026):

  • Bosphorus crossing (if you start in Europe): about 75 TL for the July 15 Martyrs Bridge. Starting from the Asian side, for example Kadıköy, there is no such fee.
  • O-4 option: about 120 TL for the Çamlıca–Sapanca section.
  • Northern Marmara Motorway option: Çamlıca–Mecidiye 56, Mecidiye–Kurnaköy 65 and Kurnaköy–İzmit Doğu 490 TL, about 611 TL in total.

These figures only cover the stretch from Istanbul to Sapanca and İzmit Doğu. Motorway fees beyond Sapanca toward Bolu are not included in them, and we give no total here. In other words, the option that saves about 6 minutes costs about 490 TL more. How fees show up in your price is explained in bridge, tunnel and motorway tolls, and the choice of Bosphorus crossing in our bridge or tunnel guide.

Sample day plan: Abant

  • 06:30: Leave Taksim or Kadıköy. Leaving early on a weekend puts both the traffic and the crowds behind you.
  • About 09:45–10:00: Arrive at Abant. You can have breakfast on the way or at the lake.
  • 10:00–15:30: Walk around the lake, take breaks, have lunch. There is a walking path around the lake.
  • 15:30: Head back. On a Sunday the drive from Abant to Taksim at 17:00 can reach 209 minutes, so on Sunday it makes sense to leave a bit earlier.
  • About 19:00: Back in Istanbul.

Sample day plan: Yedigöller

Start the day a little earlier for Yedigöller: leave at 06:00 and arrive around 09:30–10:00. Keep your time in the park to about four hours or less, since the drive back is between 3 h 20 min and 3 h 50 min. If you would rather not be on mountain roads as it gets dark, leave by about 14:30–15:00 at the latest.

Season and road conditions

Both routes are known for their autumn colours. In winter, snow and ice can change road conditions, national park access and driving times. Check the weather and the status of the park entrances with the relevant authority before you go. The times in this article are estimates for normal road conditions.

Why a private car makes sense

On a day trip that approaches seven hours of driving, taking your own car can be tiring, and whoever drives home does not enjoy the end of the day. With a private car, everyone enjoys the road. A Mercedes-Benz Vito carries 7 passengers, 6–7 large suitcases and a few carry-on bags, so there is plenty of room for picnic gear and rain jackets. For a day trip you can plan the outbound and return as two separate bookings. Settle the return time and pickup address in advance.

If you want a shorter trip in the same direction, see our Sapanca and Maşukiye guide. For a longer journey, our Cappadocia by road guide uses the same motorway.
