From Galataport Cruise Terminal to Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen
The last morning of a cruise tends to bring one question: how long will it take me to reach the airport after I leave the ship? Galataport sits in Karaköy on the Bosphorus, right in the middle of the city. That is good news, because both of Istanbul's airports are within about an hour. It is not true at every time of day, though. This guide covers drive times from Galataport to Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), crossing fees, luggage, and how to work out when to leave for your flight.
Galataport to Istanbul Airport (IST)
The distance is about 39 km. According to Google Routes traffic predictions (approximate, as of 2026), the drive takes:
- Tuesday 07:00: 35 min
- Tuesday 10:00: 37 min
- Tuesday 16:00: 43 min
- Saturday 08:00: 35 min
- Saturday 13:00: 38 min
So Istanbul Airport is a 35–45 minute drive at almost any hour. The fastest suggested option has no bridge, tunnel or motorway fee, since it runs through the city on a toll-free road. The alternatives that use the Northern Marmara Motorway add motorway fees and take longer.
Galataport to Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)
The distance is about 41 km, but the time depends much more on the hour because the route crosses the Bosphorus:
- Tuesday 07:00: 47 min
- Tuesday 10:00: 47 min
- Tuesday 16:00: 73 min
- Saturday 08:00: 40 min
- Saturday 13:00: 61 min
A drive of 40–47 minutes in the morning can pass an hour on a weekday afternoon, and even a Saturday lunchtime reaches 61 minutes. If you fly from Sabiha Gökçen, leave a wider margin than you would for Istanbul Airport.
Bridge and motorway fees
The amounts below are the values currently set in the booking system. They are approximate, valid as of 2026, and updated when tariffs change.
- To Istanbul Airport: no crossing fee on the fastest suggested option.
- To Sabiha Gökçen: about 75 TL for the Bosphorus crossing (July 15 Martyrs Bridge or Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge) and about 56 TL for the Çamlıca–Kurtköy section of the Anatolian Motorway, so roughly 131 TL in total.
If you would rather cross the Bosphorus through the Eurasia Tunnel, the tunnel fee is about 495 TL. Our guide to bridge or tunnel covers when each crossing is worth it, and our article on bridge, tunnel and motorway tolls shows how the fees appear in your price.
Leaving the ship with luggage
Cruise passengers often travel with more luggage than the average airport passenger: suitcases from a two-week trip, shopping bags, gifts. A Mercedes-Benz Vito carries 7 passengers, 6–7 large suitcases and a few carry-on bags. If your group or luggage goes beyond that, say so when you book. Eight passengers or more than seven large suitcases need two vehicles.
How and where you collect your luggage from the ship depends on the arrangements of the ship and the port. We do not give a rule or a time for it here. Follow what your ship and cruise agent tell you.
Meeting point and waiting
Where vehicles may enter the port area and where they may wait depends on the rules of the port operator and the ship. These can change, and we cannot fix them on your behalf. A practical approach: enter Galataport as the pickup address when you book, keep your ship schedule and disembarkation details to hand, and confirm the exact meeting point with us before the transfer using the contact details in your booking confirmation.
The time you can leave the ship depends on the ship's schedule and the processes at the port. That is why we give no disembarkation time here. Use the time your cruise agent gives you when you set the transfer.
Timing your transfer around your flight
The arithmetic is the same as in how early to leave for the airport: airlines generally recommend being at the airport about 2 hours before domestic departures and about 3 hours before international ones. The exact rule is on your ticket and on the airline's website.
An example: you have an international flight leaving Istanbul Airport at 18:00, so you need to be there at 15:00. The prediction for a Tuesday drive around 16:00 is 43 minutes. Add a 30-minute margin and you need to leave Galataport at about 13:45. By then you must be off the ship with your luggage. If the ship's schedule cannot promise that, a later flight is the safer choice.
For Sabiha Gökçen, widen the margin. Around 16:00 on a weekday the drive can reach 73 minutes.
From the airport to the ship
Going the other way, you land and then board a ship, the times differ a little. From Istanbul Airport to Galataport the predictions are 44–51 minutes. From Sabiha Gökçen they range from 40 minutes in the morning to 72 around midday. The last boarding time is the ship's rule and is printed in your cruise documents, so plan the transfer well before it. If you enter your flight number when you book, your flight is tracked, and when it is late our operations team updates the pickup plan to the new landing time and informs your driver. We cover this in what happens to your transfer if your flight is delayed.
